Bodyguard services in Barcelona; safety first, comfort and fun next.

Barcelona is one of the epic cities in Spain. It’s a city that has it all; a historic city center, sightseeing, culinary delights, culture, and all that in combination with beaches. For the work-related readers among us, Barcelona is a business hub you surely want to visit. So we are not surprised it is a magnet to many. You would think this modern city with millions of business people and vacationers coming every year is a safe city to travel to. And you are right. Generally, you run the same ‘risks’ as in any other big city. However, their autonomous status within Spain and a few recent incidents related to terrorism have led to some inquiries about private security and bodyguard services in Barcelona. For that reason, we gladly share in this article what we advise our clients to do when traveling to this beautiful city.

What is Barcelona about?

Thanks to its excellent geographical location, it has a port (the largest in the Mediterranean), which allowed Barcelona to become a trading center in the region ages ago. Today, production industries focus on textiles, automobiles, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and electronics. Additionally, services include logistics, IT, and media.

Additionally, tourism is a growing industry for the city still. The number of tourists grew exponentially after the Olympics of 1992, for which the city rebuilt its entire coastline and created over 4 kilometers of beaches, including showers, coast guards, and hotels and restaurants.

Barcelona’s port welcomes numerous cruise ship visitors each year. The port is within walking distance of the beach, and La Rambla, the famous promenade where artists present their work and market stalls sell their goods.

The city has some incredible places of interest; some ultra-modern, others historic. They include churches, museums, parks, and buildings. At least 9 of these buildings can be found on the UNESCO World Heritage List. A staggering seven of them were designed by Antoni Gaudí. Tourists who do not favor sightseeing can enjoy exquisite cuisine.

Is Barcelona safe?

One of our best safety tips is always to be vigilant and use common sense. Like visiting any large city, you should not flash your belongings and always keep an eye on your luggage, especially at night.

However, Barcelona is not just another Spanish city. It is the capital of Catalonia, an autonomous region with a unique identity identified as a nation within Spain. Some citizens and politicians dispute the national government, resulting in tensions after its unilateral claim of independence in October 2017. Avoid demonstrations and political gatherings related to these tensions at all times.

Violent crime is not that common, but other risks include the following:

  • Terrorist attacks aimed at harming foreigners took place in the summer of 2017. Vehicles deliberately drove on La Rambla, killing and injuring several tourists. Barcelona’s police have been extra alert since then.
  • Mass events and processions take place occasionally. Consult local authorities and keep yourself updated on any risks.
  • Climbers and hikers should take extreme temperature changes into account in the greater Barcelona region. Make sure your activities are well-prepared, and bring enough gear and drinks. Reports have been filed that the rescue operations from ill-prepared hikes and bike tours have been billed to the victim.
  • Petty crime and theft rates have increased over the last couple of years. Watch your pockets and purses and don’t accept “free of charge” items on the streets.

Some neighborhoods (barrios) are best to avoid, such as El Raval. It is very close to La Rambla (a tourist site), but this area is known for gangs and theft. Also, avoid small and deserted streets in the dark, as they have a higher risk of petty crime. Instead, stay in busy streets among lots of people enjoying the nightlife.
